Winston Churchill called it “the most lovely spot in the whole world.” Our last night in Marrakech and the last night of our anniversary trip was spent at the legendary LaMamounia Hotel in Marrakech. An oasis in the heart of the hustle and bustle of downtown Marrakech, this hotel offered everything one would expect from a hotel rated as the best hotel in all of Africa (by our tour guide).
La Mamounia – The Hotel
La Mamounia is named for its 200-year-old gardens, which were given as an 18th-century wedding gift to Prince Moulay Mamoun by his father.
The hotel was designed in 1922 by the architects Prost and Marchisio. They combined traditional Moroccan designs with the popular Art Deco look of the 1920’s. Although the hotel has been renovated numerous times since it was first built, the owners have kept this decor and authentic Moroccan flair alive throughout the property.
The rooms and suites are large, with high ceilings. Each room featured views of either the pool and gardens or the mosque and old city. We stayed in a room that overlooked the hustle and bustle of the old city with the most magnificent view of The Koutoubia Mosque.
The decor in rooms mimic that seen throughout the hotel and is a wonderful blend of Moorish art with a modern flair.
After spending some time in our room, we decided to explore the rest of the hotel.
The gardens of LaMamounia are open to the public and definitely a sight to behold. The gardens are an oasis separated from the outside world by walls.
If you’ve looked up Marrakech on instagram it’s very likely that you’ve come across the beautiful spa at La Mamounia. The spa features a jacuzzi, hammam and gorgeous indoor pool surrounded by spa beds. The architecture on the inside of the spa matches the luxurious La Mamounia aesthetic; beautiful Moroccan tiled walls, stained glass and mirrored doors are some of the features. Overlooking the pool is an elevated platform with a bed and comfortable pillows. If there’s a place to pose for a picture, this is the spot.
By the time morning came and we were at the end of our stay, we didn’t want to leave.
