A STAYCATION AT THOMPSON TORONTO

A couple of weeks ago, Bernie and I did our first ever staycation at Thompson Hotel Toronto. It’s a bit of a funny concept booking a hotel room in the city where you live and pretending to be on vacation but I can assure you that it is well worth it.

I remember that as kids, we would often spend weekends at this particular hotel in the town where we grew up. I always looked forward to these weekends even though all we did was have dinner at the hotel restaurant and sleep. Everyone was more relaxed and this excitement remains the same today. Staycations are a great opportunity to relax and reconnect with each other and with yourself. You get to take a bit of a break from the business of life (even though you are in familiar surroundings). You can even still experience the build up and excitement that you get when you are about to embark on a trip or adventure. It is also cheaper- you don’t have to worry about airplane prices and other travel expenses. I would recommend this to anyone who is interested and I definitely look forward to many more staycations in our future.

After scouring the internet for the perfect mix of convenience, luxury and affordability, Thompson Hotel Toronto was our destination of choice for our very first staycation in Toronto. Thompson Hotel is a luxury hotel nestled in the heart of downtown Toronto. With great shopping, restaurants and tourist attractions within a walking distance from the hotel, it is great place to stay when visiting the city.

Our staycation fell on Valentine’s day weekend, so we chose to start our stay on Thursday evening (Valentine’s Day) after work. Seeing as we both work downtown, we planned to check in to the hotel after work. Believe me when I tell you that I could barely concentrate all day. I was looking forward to the weekend so much, you would think I was actually going somewhere.

Immediately after work, I made the short walk to the hotel and checked in. Bernie had our weekend bags, so literally all I had with me was the small backpack that I take to work. I laughed a little at myself when the receptionist asked how my trio was and if I needed help taking my luggage up to the room.

I was pleasantly surprised with the room- it was the perfect mix of cozy and modern and it is what I vowed to design my master bedroom & bathroom identically in our next home. I lay on the bed and waited for Bernie to arrive.

After a quick recharge, Bernie and I headed downstairs for dinner. We did not make prior plans for dinner and we were happy enough to order pizza and ‘chill’ in our pajamas if we couldn’t find a restaurant close enough to us. As soon as we walked downstairs, we saw a sign for a restaurant- Hibachi Teppanyaki & Bar. We were pleasantly surprised to find out that we didn’t need a reservation to get a table right away. Dinner was great, made even better by the fact that we didn’t have to go outside or wait for a table.

The next morning, I slept blissfully through my regular alarm knowing that my commute to work would be a whole hour shorter than what it normally is. The only thing that made this staycation not perfect was the fact that we both had work on Friday. I left without grabbing breakfast, but Bernie ordered breakfast from Thompson Bar downstairs. His verdict: Nothing to write home about. Not to worry though if you are thinking of spending time at this hotel because there is no shortage of restaurants and cafes around. In fact one of my favourites Colette Grand cafe is right downstairs.

After work on Friday, we headed back to the hotel for some much needed R&R. I took a long bath and then got ready to go up for drinks at the famous rooftop bar of Thompson Hotel. The massive mirrors made getting ready really easy. The lighting was also bright enough for applying makeup- something that not all hotel bathrooms get right.

The views from the rooftop were stunning. The only regret I had was the fact that because we were there in the winter, we were not able to go outside. My hope is that we would get the opportunity to visit in the summer when we can take advantage of the views. (Heyyy photoshoot location)

By the end of our stay, we didn’t want to leave. I can definitely guarantee that we will be back.
